Fit for THE King
According to media accounts (for example, http://www.allbusiness.com/reports-reviews-sections/restaurant/14811123-1.html), early last summer, Zella Davis the manager of the Lake View Restaurant in Lake Oroville, California was approached by three men about having a party for friends on Monday July 12 at the restaurant. The men would not identify the guest. They said there would be about forty people. Normally the restaurant is closed on Mondays, but Davis said she would see what she could do.
Then, toward the end of June, two of the men returned and plans were finalized, though the identity of the guest was still not given. When the day of the party arrived, fifteen secret service agents showed up. Davis let them do their security search, but she insisted they tell her who the guest was. They told her it was the King of Jordan.
A short time later, King Abdullah II and the Crown Prince both arrived on motorcycles. Davis said there were about a dozen other members of family and friends also on motorcycles. In addition, the entourage included a truck loaded with spare bikes, a mechanic and medical staff.
Although Davis had planned a menu of New York steak, country fries and chicken piccata, the King Abdullah asked if he could have something else. “He wanted nachos, onion rings and a grilled turkey sandwich.” She quickly accommodated his royal wish. When the King finished eating and stood up to leave there was a sudden flurry of activity and then the visit was over. “It was fast, furious, bold and amazingly fun,” Davis remembered. “Now we can have this new thing, ‘we’re fit for a king.'”
Davis and her staff didn’t know they would be entertaining a king, a crown prince, and other royalty, yet they sought to do their best. So when they discovered their mystery guest was a king, they didn’t have to rush around changing things. They were prepared. Even when asked for something different than what they’d planned, they were ready.
The beauty for followers of Jesus that we know our King is coming. We know he’s returning. While we don’t know when, we know with certainty it will happen. What are we doing to be prepared? 2 Peter 3:14 says, “since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.”
Are you ready for the King of kings to return? What efforts are you making to be found spotless, blameless, and at peace with him? May we be able to say that we’re “fit for THE King!”
